My thoughts on the 2 year old "John". Resist redirecting as a crutch. Try eye contact down on his level, direct communication, soft words and tone. Let the child know that you see him, you acknowledge him. Resist telling the parents that his behavior is unacceptable. He is acting out because he is desperate for attention (just my opinion). Talk to the parents and let them know if you try something and get any different reaction. Immediately reward a new reaction from the child with a smile and acceptance. Hold his hand. Let the child tell you when it is time to let go. Give this to the parents.
